Reading a Declarations Page: The 10-Minute Coverage Audit Every Florida Household Should Do

· Insurance · About Insurance

Your declarations page is the summary of the deal you actually bought. Ten minutes with a highlighter tells you more than any premium comparison.

Start With Limits, Not Price

Write down Coverage A through D on the home policy and bodily injury, property damage, UM, and medical payments on auto. These numbers are your protection.

Then Read Every Deductible

Florida policies carry separate hurricane and all-other-peril deductibles. A 2% hurricane deductible on a $500,000 dwelling is $10,000 before the carrier pays anything.

Finish With the Form Schedule

The list of form numbers at the bottom is your endorsement and exclusion inventory. Ask your agent to translate any form you do not recognize.

  • Take a photo of the full declarations page
  • List forms you cannot identify
  • Ask for the cost to add anything missing
