Endorsements and Exclusions: The Two Lists That Decide Whether Your Claim Is Paid

· Insurance · About Insurance

Most policyholders read the premium and the deductible and skip the two lists that actually decide claim outcomes: the endorsements that add coverage and the exclusions that take it away.

What an Endorsement Actually Does

An endorsement is a written amendment attached to your policy. It can add coverage, broaden it, restrict it, or change a condition. Endorsements are identified by form number and edition date on your declarations page.

  • Water backup and sump overflow
  • Ordinance or law coverage for code upgrades
  • Scheduled personal property for jewelry and firearms
  • Equipment breakdown
  • Service line coverage

Exclusions Are Not Fine Print, They Are the Contract

Every property policy excludes certain causes of loss. Knowing them in advance is how you plan around them rather than discover them mid-claim.

  • Flood and surface water, which requires a separate flood policy
  • Earth movement and sinkhole beyond statutory catastrophic ground cover collapse
  • Wear, tear, deterioration and neglect
  • Mold beyond a small sub-limit
  • Business activity conducted from the home

How to Audit Your Own Policy in 15 Minutes

Pull page one of your declarations, list every form number, then ask your agent for a plain-English description of each. If a form restricts coverage, ask what it would cost to buy the restriction back.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an endorsement and a rider?

They mean the same thing in practice. Property and casualty policies use “endorsement”; life and health policies more often say “rider.” Both modify the base contract.

Can an endorsement remove coverage?

Yes. Some endorsements are restrictive, such as a roof surfacing payment schedule or a limited water damage endorsement. Always ask whether a new form adds or subtracts.
